I grew up in the era of ever expanding guitar virtuosity, the 70 and 80s. As a teenager I remember always thinking that playing guitar was reserved for only those rare few born with natural talent. In fact, it’s probably safe to say most people felt and still feel that way. How those great guitar players were able to achieve such virtuosity was always a complete mystery, since there were no “Guitar Schools” or even guitar teachers available.
Even in school there were no options to learn to play a guitar. They had nearly every other instrument available in band it seemed, except guitar. So what did we do? We played sports for our extracurricular activity of choice or just got left out. I was fortunate enough to join wrestling. Although I went on to win a state championship in my senior year, the physical toll placed on my body proved a detriment I continue to live with. But, what I learned about goal setting and achievement, determination, work ethic, and desire to succeed proved paramount in every success I have since achieved in my life; these were the true lessons learned.
Do you want to succeed? Of course, we all want to succeed at everything we do. But how do you learn to succeed? There are various options, but they tend to be vague and difficult to identify. In subtle ways we might pick up some of the skills necessary for success. However, by pursuing these skills specifically through a fun and enjoyable means enables us to develop these skills quicker and more effectively. That’s how learning to play guitar can help.
I see clearly how learning to play guitar develops critical success skills, much like I learned through wrestling. Additionally, learning to play guitar develops independence, responsibility, motivation, and instills a drive to excel. Unlike sports though, playing guitar lasts a person’s lifetime instead of a few seasons, anyone can join, and injuries are highly unlikely. Playing guitar is not reserved to just those that are born with any specific physical requirements either. Face it, not everyone meets the physical requirements to join sports. That just seems very, very unfair to me since extracurricular activities provide so many benefits for a developing teen.
Perhaps the greatest benefit learning to play guitar provides is the process of goal setting and achievement, which enables success. Learning to set goals, and working through various mental and physical processes to achieve those goals, learning self motivation, responsibility, drive, desire to achieve, and getting greatly rewarded with the results, develops the critical skills to succeed at any endeavor. By focusing specifically on success skill development, students can quickly improve these skills and start applying them in all areas of their lives, while getting good at guitar. Just imagine having the ability to succeed at any endeavor and being a great guitar player.
Learning to play guitar does not have to replace sports or other extracurricular activities either. Combining as many learning opportunities as possible during ones developing stages provides even a greater foundation to stand on for the rest of their life. Because, learning to succeed enables one to apply those skills to any desired pursuit and achieve a positive result.
