Learning to play guitar is a lot of fun, but there are and always will be periods where a certain area of your guitar playing is not improving as fast as you would like.
Many of us would like be able to matrix our guitar playing, plug in a sim card into the back of our brain and have us magically solo as the Satrianis of the world.
One of the magic of playing guitar that makes it exciting is watching yourself progress, and hearing how your sound develops over time. Finding your own personality in your guitar playing.
Watching yourself progress is one of the most satisfying things. But what happens when you feel like you are stagnating instead?
Firstly, we’ve got to check whether you have someone to teach you how to improve. Because having a guitar teacher, a mentor or coach. Someone who is able to help you with your guitar playing will help you over the hurdles that you cannot help yourself.
Now, if you do have someone, then I’ve got to tell you.
Even with the best instructions, certain things on the guitar takes time. It might not be long, it could be a few, weeks, months, a year or two to take hold.
Depending on your patience, this may seem like a long time.
This is why it’s important to enjoy the process of learning and practicing the guitar.
Practicing guitar in itself can be an art. The ability to break down your guitar playing, correct the parts that needs replacing and putting it all back together. It’s almost like fixing up a classic car.
One of the easiest things you can do for yourself is for whatever frustration you are feeling on the guitar. Whether it’s not being able to do bends quite right, or struggling to sweep pick. Is to do it for 5-10 minutes a day. And no more.
This is because our brain is very good at filtering information and anything it doesn’t need, it will get rid of. So if you fill it up with too many things to focus on, it won’t do any of them very well.
Now there are a certain amount of muscle memory you are developing when you practice something, and that builds more efficient over each day than it does in the same day.
That’s why it takes time to develop certain skills.
When you only focus on one thing and be that consistent about it, it’s much easier to see progress. Which will help you build more internal motivation about playing the guitar.
Appreciate the art of practicing and enjoy the plateaus of your guitar playing by finding a supportive system that helps you learn guitar is so useful for those times when you want to give up.
You just need someone to keep prompting you and holding your hand along the way. This might be a friend who wants to play with you every week, or a band you are a part of or a supportive guitar teacher.
Because no matter how hard it is, you will be able to get through it.
