Well, today I am going to let you in on a little secret. We are going talk about a topic that most people
shy away from. Today we’re going to talk about songwriting.
I’m going to go over the many benefits of songwriting and how it actually can make you a better guitar player faster. So one of the main reasons why people don’t choose to song write is because they believe they don’t have the creativity to song write or they think “oh I wasn’t born with a natural talent to song
write”. Well, I’m here to tell you that is false, songwriting is a skill just like everything else it can be developed.
Since now I’ve put your mind at ease on that, let me tell you some of the many benefits to songwriting. One is if it’s your first time, and let’s say you write a simple little riff or some really cool rhythm you like. You will get this feeling of empowerment like you’ve just climbed a huge mountain. When you experience this feeling you will want to keep on writing and you’ll look at the clock and time will have just flown by. You will be able to look back at the end of the day and think “dang I just played guitar for like two hours and at the same time I created something original also’’.
See you can do the same thing when it comes to playing covers but either one of two things are going to happen; one is you will just be repeating the same thing over and over again, for most people including myself, unless you can see yourself continually improving, you will find yourself getting extremely bored. Or you will have the one song down and then you will be like “well now what’’.
Another reason why songwriting is so crucial to your guitar playing, cause imagine if you’d been practicing songwriting, you’d be able to take pieces of those songs and create something of you own. What that means is, like I said in the beginning, songwriting is a skill of itself. If you don’t use it you’ll lose it.
I hope you’re starting to get excited now! If you’re not I bet by the end of this article you will be! So here is another benefit of writing your own songs vs playing covers, when you write your own songs it forces you to use your ear. You’re probably wondering “ what’s does that mean to use your ear”. What this means is, the more you song write, the closer you’re to being able to play what you hear in your head.
Yes you can receive the same benefit by just transposing one of your favorite songs but most people don’t do that, most of the time they go online and either find the sheet music or tab, you can transpose your favorite songs but in the beginning if you’ve never wrote a song before coming up something on your own will be much easier and far less frustrating.
The last thing we’re going to talk about today is, creativity, when you practice songwriting this help increases your creativity skills, how does it do that, you might be wondering? Well creativity is a skill just like everything, the more you practice on being creative in music, the better you will be!
To conclude this article, I hope I’ve opened your mind to how important songwriting really is and beneficial it is to your guitar playing. If you want to know more about songwriting visit my website at: www.guitarlessonsinlewistonid.com
